We're now in the time of year, when traditional gardeners put the garden to bed (ie cut down the perennials down, hard prune the roses, plan to make the last cut of the year), but with milder winters, the period of dormancy gets shorter, it's not uncommon to see herbaceous borders still up til christmas, roses in flower, and the non mowing month has become January. There are advantages and disadvantages to this autumn extension. For every grass enthusiast who loves the hoar frost sharp on the autumn foliage, there is a gardener that likes to see the garden spick and span, and ship shape, bristol fashion. It will be interesting to note when the autumn display of the grassy border becomes as traditional as the cut down herbaceous border.
